Australia’s food waste problem uncovered

Australia wastes over 7.6 million metric tonnes of food annually, enough to fill the Melbourne Cricket Ground 10 times, according to the End Food Waste report.

Amid the rising cost of living, experts are urging people to cut down on food waste.

Major supermarket chains like Coles and Woolworths, part of the Australian Food Agreement, have reduced food waste by 13% in the past three years.

This reduction has prevented approximately 505,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions and saved around 16,000 tonnes of food between 2022 and 2024.

The agreement aims to conserve water and arable land, lower emissions, and provide surplus food to those in need, with over 250 million meals donated so far.

The End Food Waste Institute reports that 3.5 million Australian families faced poverty last year, highlighting the urgency of addressing food waste.
