An Australia-first facility, the Minderoo Children’s Comprehensive Cancer Centre, has officially opened in Sydney, aiming to deliver world-leading care for children and young people diagnosed with cancer.
Located at Sydney Children’s Hospital, Randwick, the centre has the capacity to support around 900 paediatric cancer professionals and is equipped with advanced medical technology and modern treatment facilities.
The project was completed at a cost of $658 million, with funding support from both the Federal and State Governments. Federal Health Minister Mark Butler said the centre represents a milestone in Australia’s healthcare system and a source of national pride.
He noted that for the first time, Australia now has a fully integrated, purpose-built cancer centre dedicated exclusively to improving outcomes for children and young people. He added that the facility is expected to transform how paediatric cancer care is delivered.
The centre combines clinical treatment with research and education, including training programs in partnership with the University of New South Wales. It will also serve as a hub for developing new therapies and improving survival rates.
Backed by the Minderoo Foundation, founded by businessman Andrew “Twiggy” Forrest, the project aims to accelerate breakthroughs in childhood cancer treatment. Forrest said the facility would play a crucial role in making childhood cancer less fatal by advancing research and care together.
