Australia’s first AI degree to launch in Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka and Australia have partnered to introduce the first-ever Australian degree in Artificial Intelligence (AI) in Sri Lanka.

The program is a collaboration between the Sri Lanka Institute of Information Technology (SLIIT) and Australia’s Deakin University.

Australian High Commissioner Paul Stevens stated that the three-year course will allow Sri Lankan students to benefit from SLIIT’s local expertise while receiving a globally recognized education from Deakin University.

He added that the course will provide in-depth knowledge and practical skills in AI, data science, machine learning, and robotics, ensuring a global standard of education by aligning with Deakin University’s curriculum.

Professor Rupak Sinha, Associate Dean at Deakin University, mentioned that students will gain insights from Deakin University professors and have the opportunity to transfer to Australia at any time. Additionally, talented students will receive a 25% scholarship on tuition fees.

He further emphasized that the degree program will contribute to technological advancements in Sri Lanka and help develop world-class AI professionals in South Asia.
