Australia’s Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Defence, Richard Marles, is set to visit the Maldives, Sri Lanka, India, and Indonesia from 2nd to 5 th of June for high-level meetings, according to a statement by the Australian government.

The visit aims to strengthen diplomatic and defence ties in South and Southeast Asia as part of Australia’s broader Indo-Pacific strategy. In the Maldives and Sri Lanka, discussions will centre around Australian support for sovereign capability development in both countries.

In India, the visit coincides with the fifth anniversary of the Australia-India Comprehensive Strategic Partnership. Marles will meet with Indian officials to reaffirm the strong bilateral defence relationship and shared vision for the Indian Ocean region.

While in Indonesia, Marles will meet his counterpart to reinforce Australia’s commitment to a peaceful, secure, and prosperous Indo-Pacific.

Ahead of his tour, Marles stated, “Australia values our relationships with neighbours in the Indo-Pacific. Our deepening cooperation is at the heart of Australia’s approach to ensure the region remains open, inclusive and resilient.”

He added, “I look forward to meeting leaders and engaging in productive discussions on shaping a secure and prosperous region that respects sovereignty.”

The visit comes shortly after Marles’ reappointment as Deputy Prime Minister and Defence Minister, following the re-election of Prime Minister Anthony Albanese. India’s Defence Minister Rajnath Singh congratulated Marles on his reappointment and expressed hopes for continued cooperation under the India-Australia Comprehensive Strategic Partnership.
