The International Energy Agency has urged Australians to work from home as fuel prices surge and supplies tighten amid the ongoing Middle East conflict, which is threatening global oil supply.

The agency issued its warning as diesel prices reached a record high of $3 per litre, prompting a set of 10 recommendations aimed at reducing fuel consumption. These include working remotely, reducing driving speeds, using public transport, carpooling, and avoiding non-essential air travel.

Fuel prices across Australia have risen sharply, with the cheapest petrol recorded in Perth at $2.19 per litre, while parts of Melbourne, including Hawthorn and Kingsbury, have seen prices climb to between $2.99 and $3.10 per litre. In Sydney, prices have also increased significantly, with areas such as Lewisham recording petrol prices above $2.79 per litre. The national average currently stands at around $2.45 per litre, with little relief expected in the near term.

Paul Scarr called on the government to clearly communicate the country’s fuel supply situation, stressing the importance of ensuring diesel availability for farmers and key industries.

In response to the crisis, the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission has allowed fuel companies to collaborate and coordinate supply to prevent shortages, while still prohibiting any coordination on fuel pricing. Treasurer Jim Chalmers said the move is aimed at ensuring fuel reaches households, industries, and regional areas where it is most needed.

Meanwhile, Chris Minns revealed that dozens of petrol stations in New South Wales have already run out of fuel, highlighting the growing strain on supply.

The IEA emphasised that immediate behavioural and policy changes are necessary to ease pressure on fuel markets and maintain supply during the ongoing global energy disruption.
