Australians to hospital in Fiji for suspected alcohol poisoning

Several Australian tourists are in a critical condition in a hospital in Fiji, suspected of alcohol poisoning.

Local health officials say seven guests staying at the Warwick Resort on Coral Beach, Fiji became ill after consuming a cocktail at the resort’s bar on Saturday night.

They were taken to nearby Sigatoka Hospital with “nausea, vomiting and neurological symptoms”.

Two of the group were later taken to Lautoka Hospital in critical condition.

Tourists are aged between 18 and 56 years.

Four of the seven are understood to be Australian.

Police and health inspectors are investigating.

A spokesman for the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade said consular assistance was being provided to two Australian families in Fiji.
