Australians pay $250B in tax as dozens of millionaires pay nothing

Australians paid over $298 billion in personal income tax in 2022–23, contributing to a total tax revenue of $577.4 billion.

Despite the massive tax collection, 139 of the 24,350 millionaires in Australia paid no income tax, using deductions to reduce their liabilities to zero.

Personal income tax made up 51.6% of total tax revenue, while company tax contributed $140 billion and GST accounted for $81.7 billion.

Work-related expenses were the most commonly claimed deductions, totaling $28.3 billion.

Excise taxes on tobacco, fuel, and alcohol raised $25.4 billion, and superannuation taxes brought in another $24 billion.

Resource-based taxes like the petroleum resource rent tax, along with luxury car and wine taxes, generated only $4.2 billion—less than 1% of total tax revenue.

Surgeons remained the top earners, with an average annual income of $472,475.

The wealthiest area in the country was postcode 2027 in eastern Sydney, where average incomes reached $279,712.
