Australian higher education has received a major global boost, with nine universities securing places among the world’s top 100 in the latest QS World University Rankings for 2027.
For the first time, UNSW Sydney has been named Australia’s highest-ranked university, rising to 19th place globally and overtaking the University of Melbourne.
The rankings highlight the growing international reputation of Australian institutions, with several universities recording their best-ever performances.
The University of Melbourne placed 22nd globally, while the Australian National University climbed to 29th and Monash University ranked 31st worldwide.
Experts say strong results in research, graduate employability, sustainability and global partnerships have helped Australian universities remain highly competitive on the world stage.
Globally, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology retained the number one position, while Imperial College London and Stanford University shared second place.
