Workers in the Australian state of Victoria will gain a legal right to work from home up to two days a week under new legislation proposed by Premier Jacinta Allan.
The Victorian Government said the new law will apply to employees whose jobs can reasonably be carried out remotely, making Victoria the first jurisdiction in Australia to introduce such legislation.
The measure will be implemented through amendments to the Equal Opportunity Act and is expected to take effect from September 1, 2026.
Small businesses with fewer than 15 employees will receive an extended transition period, with the law applying to them from July 2027.
Premier Allan said the initiative is intended to improve work-life balance, reduce commuting pressures, and make everyday life easier for working families.
The proposal has received mixed reactions, with supporters welcoming increased workplace flexibility, while some business groups have expressed concerns about possible impacts on productivity and business operations.
The legislation applies only within Victoria and does not extend nationwide across Australia.
