Australian PM welcomes new citizens, including Sri Lankans

Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese acknowledged the country’s new citizens, including those from Sri Lanka, during Australia Day celebrations on Sunday.

Citizenship ceremonies were held nationwide, with the main event taking place in Canberra, attended by the Prime Minister.

“Today, in cities, towns, beaches, and backyards across the country, we celebrate what unites us as Australians,” he said during the ceremony.

Twenty-four new citizens from countries such as Brazil, Sri Lanka, India, and Vietnam officially became Australians at the event.

“It’s an honour to share this moment with you. You’ll always remember this Australia Day as your first day as an Australian,” the Prime Minister remarked.

Reflecting on Australia’s immigration history, he highlighted the seven individuals who first received citizenship 76 years ago and the over six million who have followed since.

He emphasized that Australia is a nation built on hope, hard work, and equality, where every citizen counts.

Calling Australia, the “greatest country on earth,” he urged citizens to seize opportunities to make it even better.
