Matthew Duckworth visited Sri Lanka’s largest lentil and pulse processing plant in Kelaniya last week, highlighting the strong collaboration between Australia and Sri Lanka. The visit showcased how high-quality Australian produce is combined with Sri Lankan manufacturing expertise to create a successful global partnership.
During the visit, Duckworth suggested introducing a new concept called “Melbourne Dhal,” inspired by both Australian and Sri Lankan culinary traditions. He said this fusion could enhance the flavour and nutritional value of traditional Mysore Dhal while appealing to modern tastes and a wider global audience.
The processing plant demonstrates the successful integration of Australian lentils into Sri Lanka’s food supply chain, producing for both local consumption and export markets. The collaboration has contributed to improved product quality, job creation, and increased incomes in both countries.
With exports reaching over 20 countries, the facility has established a strong global presence, positioning Australian-Sri Lankan lentils on dining tables across the region and beyond. It reflects how international partnerships can drive economic growth and expand trade opportunities.
Duckworth described the initiative as a model of innovation and cooperation, noting that the partnership strengthens Sri Lanka’s position in global trade while opening doors for further collaboration in other sectors.
He added that the growing demand for lentils presents significant opportunities, with the combined strengths of Australian agriculture and Sri Lankan manufacturing creating a pathway for sustained economic growth, job creation, and a thriving export market.
