Australia to play two tests at Galle

The Australian cricket team is set to arrive in Sri Lanka on January 20 for a series featuring two Test matches and one One-Day International (ODI).

Sri Lanka Cricket announced that the Test matches will be held at the Galle International Cricket Stadium, while the ODI will take place at the Mahinda Rajapaksa International Cricket Stadium in Hambantota.

The first Test will run from 29th of January to 2nd of February, followed by the second Test from 6th to 10th of February.

The ODI, a day-night fixture, is scheduled for 13th of February.

These Test matches are part of the ongoing World Test Championship (WTC), where South Africa has already secured a spot in the final.

Australia’s recent victory in the fourth Test against India in Melbourne has strengthened their chances of reaching the WTC 2025 final, needing just one more win to guarantee a place at Lord’s.

India is still in contention but must win their final Test against Australia and rely on favorable results during Australia’s tour of Sri Lanka to stay in the race.

Although South Africa’s qualification has almost ended Sri Lanka’s hopes, the island nation still clings to a slim chance.

Despite a strong win over England and a 2-0 series victory over New Zealand, Sri Lanka’s 2-0 loss to South Africa has dampened their prospects.

To stay in the hunt for the WTC final, Sri Lanka must win both Tests against Australia at home and hope for a draw in the final Test between Australia and India in Sydney.
