The Australia government has confirmed that it will not deploy defence assets to the Strait of Hormuz, dismissing speculation that the United States might request such assistance amid rising tensions in the Middle East.
Patrick Gorman, a spokesperson for the Australian Labor Party, said Australia’s current focus remains on defensive measures and supporting regional partners, including providing additional weaponry requested by the United Arab Emirates.
Responding to speculation about possible requests from Washington, Gorman said no formal request had been received and stressed that the government would not speculate on hypothetical scenarios given the seriousness of the regional situation.
He noted that Australia exercises caution when deploying its military assets and therefore has chosen not to proactively send forces into the region.
Gorman also pointed out that several countries already operating in the area possess military assets located much closer to the Middle East, while Australia has opted for a more restrained approach.
He added that the government’s decisions are guided by the priority of protecting civilians rather than escalating tensions in the region.
