A new report on fare evasion across Australian states has revealed significant financial losses due to non-payment of public transport fares.
Australia, known to have the third most expensive public transport system in the world, is facing millions in revenue losses annually.
In Victoria, around 4 percent of passengers evade fares, leading to an estimated loss of $28 million. New South Wales records the highest rate of fare evasion at 8 percent, resulting in a $127 million loss.
Queensland also suffers, losing approximately $37 million each year.
Canberra sees a 3 percent fare evasion rate, while South and Western Australia report only 1 percent. Northern Australia stands out for offering free public transport.
A transport expert from Griffith University has suggested reducing fares as a possible solution to minimize fare evasion and its economic impact on the country.
