The Allen Labor government has decided to name places and roads in Victoria after women to mark International Women’s Day.
Currently, more than half of the newly named places in Victoria honor women. However, the Victorian government aims to expand this initiative further to recognize more women’s contributions across the state.
In 2023, only 35 percent of new memorials were named after women, but last year, this number increased to 57 percent.
Historically, of the 5,000 named roads and places across Victoria, 1,400 were named after men, while only 200 honored women.
To address this imbalance, nominations are now open to the public. Victorians can suggest women who have made a significant impact on the community in fields such as healthcare, science, arts, or public service.
