Australia is facing a growing shortage of sperm donors, as more people turn to donor conception to start or expand their families.

Data from Genea Fertility shows demand for donor sperm increased by 97.6 per cent between 2022 and 2025, leaving many Australians facing long waiting periods for treatment.

However, only around two per cent of men who apply to become sperm donors ultimately qualify, due to strict medical, genetic screening and counselling requirements.

The shortage is also being affected by state-based limits on how many families can use sperm from a single donor. In New South Wales, the limit is five families, while Victoria and South Australia allow the sperm of one donor to be used by up to 10 families.

With local donors in short supply, almost half of Australians seeking donor treatment are reportedly turning to overseas sperm banks, with the process potentially costing up to 10,000 Australian dollars.

Experts warn the shortage is creating significant emotional and financial pressure for single mothers, same-sex couples and families experiencing fertility challenges.

They say Australia needs more eligible donors to meet rapidly growing demand and ensure people seeking fertility treatment have greater access to donor sperm.
