Australia drop Marnus Labuschagne, recall Sam Konstas for first test against West Indies

Out-of-form Australian batter Marnus Labuschagne has been dropped from the squad for the first Test against the West Indies, marking a major selection shake-up ahead of the series opener at Kensington Oval in Bridgetown next week.

In a statement released Friday morning, Australian selectors confirmed the omission of Labuschagne, who has struggled for form over the past year, averaging just 27.82. His recent promotion to open the batting in the World Test Championship final against South Africa yielded modest scores of 17 and 22.

In his place, selectors have recalled promising teenager Sam Konstas and reserve wicketkeeper Josh Inglis, both of whom impressed in their limited Test opportunities. Inglis scored a century on debut in Galle earlier this year, while Konstas made headlines with a half-century on debut against India.

Vice-captain Steve Smith will also miss the first Test due to a finger injury sustained during the WTC final. Chief selector George Bailey said Smith needs more time to recover and will be reassessed in the coming days.

“We’ve decided to give Josh and Sam the opportunity to replace Steve and Marnus. We’re excited to see them continue their promising Test careers,” Bailey said.

He added that while Labuschagne remains a valued member of the squad, his performance has not met expectations. “Marnus at his best is an important player for us. He understands where he stands and we’ll continue to support him in getting back to his best.”

Labuschagne’s exclusion has sparked widespread debate, particularly as Australia’s top order begins transitioning following David Warner’s retirement. Former coach Justin Langer had recently urged selectors to retain Labuschagne, citing his experience as crucial to mentoring younger players.

The final playing XI, including the bowling lineup and batting order, is expected to be announced closer to the start of the match on Wednesday.
