Australian families will soon receive a major boost as the federal government’s Paid Parental Leave scheme expands to a full six months from July 1.
Eligible parents will be able to access up to 26 weeks of government-funded leave, giving families more time to care for newborn and newly adopted children.
The expansion is the culmination of a gradual increase introduced by the Albanese Government, which has added extra weeks to the scheme each year.
Families accessing the full entitlement could receive close to $30,000 in payments, helping ease financial pressures during the early months of parenthood.
The reforms also encourage greater sharing of caring responsibilities between parents and provide more flexibility in how leave is taken.
The government says the expanded scheme will strengthen support for working families, improve gender equality, and help more parents balance work and family life.
The expansion to 26 weeks of Paid Parental Leave takes effect from 1 July 2026 and is described by the government as the largest boost to the scheme since it was introduced in 2011. More than 180,000 families are expected to benefit each year from the reforms.
