Australia aims to cut road deaths by 50% by 2030

The Australian government has set a goal to reduce road deaths by 50% by 2030 and has pledged financial support to states and territories to help achieve this target.

However, a recent report shows that road deaths have actually increased.

Michael Bradley, Managing Director of the Australian Automobile Association, emphasizes that it is the government’s responsibility to seek expert advice to address this issue.

Mark Stevenson, a professor at the University of Melbourne specializing in urban transport and public health, highlights that speeding is a major factor in accidents.

After collecting data from around a thousand drivers, Stevenson notes that despite efforts to encourage speed limits, it is not being followed.

He suggests that the government can still meet its road safety targets by addressing the key causes of accidents, such as speeding.
