Asanka Podiappuhamilage: Sri Lankan national charged with sexual assault on flight to Australia

The Melbourne Magistrates Court issued an order today against a 41-year-old Sri Lankan, Asanka Mathew, accused of sexually assaulting a woman on an international flight from Sri Lanka to Melbourne on 18th of December.

The court prohibited him from leaving Australia until the legal proceedings are concluded.

Mr. Mathew appeared in court with an interpreter and two supporters. He faces charges for committing an indecent act on a female passenger during the flight.

He was arrested upon arrival at Melbourne Airport on 18th of December and now faces a potential maximum sentence of seven years in prison if found guilty.

The court granted him bail under strict conditions, including surrendering his passport, reporting to a police station three times a week, living under house curfew, and being restricted from leaving the state or country.
