“Appointment stank from day one”: Harsha de Silva on SriLankan Airlines chairman’s resignation

Opposition MP Harsha de Silva has raised concerns over governance and potential conflicts of interest following the resignation of SriLankan Airlines Chairman Sarath Ganegoda.

Reacting to the development, Dr. de Silva stated that the appointment “stank from day one,” alleging it created a significant conflict of interest involving not only Ganegoda but also senior executives connected to Hayleys PLC, citing overlapping interests in aviation services, logistics, and related sectors.

He also questioned the involvement of Presidential Advisor Duminda Hulangamuwa and auditing firm Ernst & Young, raising broader concerns about governance at SriLankan Airlines.

Dr. de Silva acknowledged that some may view his comments as biased, but said he would not elaborate further, instead encouraging others to independently assess the situation.

At the same time, he commended Presidential Advisor Hans Wijayasuriya for stepping down from his private sector roles before taking up his advisory position, describing it as the appropriate approach to avoid conflicts of interest.
