Apple has agreed to pay $152.9 million to settle a lawsuit accusing the company of using its virtual assistant Siri to eavesdrop on users.
The lawsuit alleged Siri recorded conversations without consent, even when not activated with the trigger phrase “Hey, Siri.”
Some of these recordings were reportedly shared with advertisers to target users with personalized ads, contradicting Apple’s commitment to privacy.
Apple has denied wrongdoing but agreed to the settlement, which must be approved by a U.S. District Judge in February 2024.
Eligible consumers with Siri-enabled devices from September 2014 to December 2023 could receive up to $32 per device as part of the settlement.
Lawyers representing consumers may seek $47.6 million from the settlement fund to cover legal fees and expenses.
