The Geological Survey and Mines Bureau (GSMB) has identified several areas on the slopes of Ambuluwawa mountain as high-risk landslide zones and has recommended the immediate evacuation of residents from 18 houses located in the most vulnerable areas.
The Bureau has advised that these zones be declared highly sensitive to landslides and designated as no-build areas, with all construction and development activities strictly prohibited.
An inspection team from the GSMB that examined the Ambuluwawa Biodiversity Complex observed a visible ground fissure near the entrance and subsequently inspected nearby residences. The team reported that seven houses fall within a high-risk zone, while six others are located in medium-risk areas.
Further inspections of other slopes revealed that in the Wathekade area, 11 houses and buildings are situated in high-risk zones, with an additional 12 in medium-risk zones.
Officials have recommended that all high-risk land be fully restricted and designated as conservation zones due to the severe risk of landslides. Residents in medium-risk areas have been advised to temporarily evacuate during periods of heavy rainfall or when early warning alerts are issued.
