Australian shoppers looking to cut grocery bills this winter are being urged to head to Aldi after a new consumer survey found it offers the lowest prices on everyday essentials and comfort foods.

According to the latest comparison, Aldi’s basket of winter staples cost significantly less than those of major rivals Woolworths, Coles and IGA, saving shoppers nearly $10 on average.

The survey examined a range of cold-weather favourites, including whole chicken, frozen chips, apple pies, soup ingredients, tissues and biscuits.

Aldi emerged as the clear winner, with its winter basket priced at $31.46, compared with $37.45 at Woolworths, $38.48 at Coles and $46.23 at IGA.

Even after special discounts were taken into account, Aldi remained the most affordable option, while IGA continued to be the most expensive overall.

Researchers found that home-brand products played a key role in keeping Aldi’s prices lower than its competitors.

The broader grocery basket comparison also showed Aldi leading the pack, with Woolworths and Coles remaining close competitors, while IGA’s prices varied considerably between locations.

Consumer advocates say shoppers can stretch their budgets further by comparing prices, taking advantage of specials and considering store-brand alternatives.

With cost-of-living pressures continuing to affect households, the findings offer timely guidance for Australians seeking better value at the checkout.
