Air quality deteriorates across several provinces, says CEA

Air quality has deteriorated in recent days, with the Air Quality Index (AQI) rising significantly in the Northern, North Central, North Western, and Western provinces, Central Environmental Authority (CEA) spokesperson Dr. Ajith Gunawardena said.

He noted that a sharp decline in air quality was recorded yesterday and today, with AQI levels currently ranging between 150 and 200.

Dr. Gunawardena attributed the deterioration to transboundary air pollution combined with the activation of the Northeast Monsoon, adding that similar conditions have been observed during this period in previous years. The CEA continues to closely monitor air quality and atmospheric conditions across the country.

He cautioned that individuals sensitive to poor air quality may experience adverse health effects and advised them to seek medical attention if necessary.

However, Dr. Gunawardena said the situation is expected to improve after Sunday.
