AI clips falsely show India-Lanka land bridge

The Rama Setu, also known as Adam’s Bridge, is a chain of limestone shoals that links India’s Rameswaram Island with Sri Lanka’s Mannar Island.

A video circulating on social media claiming to show scuba divers exploring the submerged Rama Setu is actually AI-generated, not real underwater footage.

The clips, shared on Facebook and Instagram, depict rock structures with inscriptions and temple-like formations under the sea, presented as if filmed by divers.

The video includes text saying, “POV: You are a scuba diver exploring Ramasetu,” suggesting a first-person experience.

Rama Setu is both a geological formation and a culturally significant site, mentioned in the Hindu epic Ramayana as a bridge built by Lord Rama and his army.

The AI-generated video gained traction around the time of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s official visit to Sri Lanka in April 2024, during which strategic deals were signed.

However, a reverse image search showed the video was posted on 27yh of March by Instagram user Bharath Kumar, who clearly stated it was created using AI tools.

Kumar, a digital creator, confirmed to AFP that he used platforms like Google Imagen AI, Midjourney, FreePik AI, and Kling to produce the video.

He said his goal was to visualize places that people can’t easily explore, and he included a disclaimer noting the content was purely for entertainment.

Satellite imagery from the European Space Agency confirms that Rama Setu is a natural formation of sandy shoals in shallow waters, some of which are still visible above sea level.

Historically, the land bridge was believed to be passable until the 15th century, before gradual erosion from storms made it impassable.
