A new Australian study has revealed a growing threat from AI-powered sexual abuse targeting young people online.

Researchers found that around one in 25 teenagers had experienced AI-assisted online sexual victimisation or knew someone who had.

The study found artificial intelligence was involved in about one in four cases of non-consensual sexual image sharing, including deepfake content.

Experts warn that criminals are using AI tools to create fake sexual images and exploit children without their consent.

The research also found many young victims are turning to AI chatbots for help and support instead of reporting to authorities.

Advocates are calling for stronger AI safeguards and better protection systems to prevent online abuse of children.
