The Attorney General yesterday informed Fort Magistrate Isuru Neththikumara that investigations into the case against former President Ranil Wickremesinghe — relating to the alleged misuse of Rs. 16.6 million in State funds — will be completed within a month, after which steps will be taken to institute proceedings before a higher court.
Additional Solicitor General Dileepa Peiris, appearing for the Attorney General, conveyed this position when a motion filed by former Presidential Secretary Saman Ekanayake was taken up before the court. Ekanayake, who is currently subject to a foreign travel ban, sought permission through the motion to have the restriction lifted.
President’s Counsel Kalinga Indatissa, representing Ekanayake, told the court that his client’s daughter, who is overseas, is expecting a child and that Ekanayake needed to travel to be with her. He therefore requested that the travel ban be removed.
