The Attorney General informed the Supreme Court yesterday that a red warrant has been obtained for the arrest of Jude Shamantha Jayamaha, who was sentenced to death in the Royal Park murder case.
This announcement was made by the State Counsel representing the Attorney General during the hearing of a Fundamental Rights petition challenging the Presidential pardon granted to Jayamaha by former President Maithripala Sirisena.
The Supreme Court convened to assess the progress of implementing its previous ruling regarding the pardon.
On June 6, 2024, the Supreme Court declared that the pardon granted to Don Shamantha Jude Anthony Jayamaha was arbitrary and legally invalid.
The Court also instructed the Attorney General and relevant authorities to initiate extradition proceedings, as Jayamaha remains a death row convict.
President’s Counsel Sanjeeva Jayawardena, along with Counsel Rukshan Senadheera, represented the petitioner, while President’s Counsel Saliya Peiris appeared on behalf of the Bar Association of Sri Lanka.
