Mojtaba Khamenei is “safe and sound” despite reports that he was injured during recent hostilities, according to a statement by government adviser Yousef Pezeshkian.
Pezeshkian, the son of Masoud Pezeshkian, said in a message posted on his Telegram channel that he had checked with several contacts regarding reports that the new leader had been injured.
“I heard news that Mr. Mojtaba Khamenei had been injured. I asked some friends who had connections. They told me that, thank God, he is safe and sound,” Pezeshkian wrote.
Earlier, Iranian state television described the 56-year-old leader as a “wounded veteran of the Ramadan war,” although it did not provide details about the nature of the reported injury.
The remarks come amid growing speculation about Khamenei’s health and whereabouts after he succeeded his father, Ali Khamenei, just three days ago.
According to a report by The New York Times, Khamenei was reportedly injured on the first day of attacks on Iran by the United States and Israel, citing Iranian and Israeli officials who spoke on condition of anonymity.
