ADB approves $3 million emergency grant to aid Sri Lanka

The Asian Development Bank (ADB) has approved a US$3 million disaster relief grant for Sri Lanka to support ongoing recovery efforts following Cyclone Ditwah.

In addition, the ADB has approved US$2 million grants each for Thailand and Vietnam, which were also affected by extreme weather events.

The announcement was made by ADB President Masato Kanda, following requests for support from the respective governments.

“I am deeply saddened by the suffering caused by these devastating floods,” Kanda said. “The governments and people of Sri Lanka, Thailand, and Vietnam can be assured that ADB will provide assistance to help save lives and rebuild communities. We will work quickly and cooperatively with governments to bring shelter, comfort, and hope to those affected by these disasters.”

The grants will fund emergency and humanitarian operations and will be provided through the Asia Pacific Disaster Response Fund (APDRF), which delivers fast-tracked support to developing member countries in the immediate aftermath of major natural disasters.

Flooding has caused widespread loss of life and significant damage to property and infrastructure across Sri Lanka and several Southeast Asian countries.

ADB is a leading multilateral development bank that supports inclusive, resilient, and sustainable growth across Asia and the Pacific. By working with its members and partners, the bank uses innovative financial tools and strategic partnerships to transform lives, build quality infrastructure, and protect the environment. Founded in 1966, ADB is owned by 69 members, 50 of whom are from the region.
