Adani Fiasco govt. pushes for tariff renegotiation, project stays

The government has not decided to revoke the Adani Wind Power projects in Mannar but has raised concerns with Indian officials about the high tariff rates offered by the Adani Group, which are significantly higher than those quoted by other companies, according to the media.

During a recent visit to India, President Anura Kumara Dissanayake and Foreign Minister Vijitha Herath discussed the project with Indian officials. The Sri Lankan delegation expressed concerns over the high tariffs, and Indian officials indicated their openness to discussions regarding the project.

Minister Herath explained that while a court case is currently ongoing concerning the project, the Attorney General is representing the government, and the final decision will depend on the court’s verdict. The next hearing for the case is scheduled for May.

Herath emphasized that the government has not made any decision to revoke the project, stressing that the primary concern has been the high tariff rates. He added that discussions with the Indian side are ongoing.

Energy Minister Kumara Jayakody also confirmed that no decision has been made to cancel the project, although he has presented a note to the Cabinet to update ministers on the project’s status and review it in line with the new government’s policies.

The Adani wind power project, which includes a 484-megawatt wind farm in the Mannar and Pooneryn coastal areas, is facing additional legal challenges in the Supreme Court over environmental concerns.
