Indian billionaire Gautam Adani’s business group is considering launching a new airline, a move that could reshape competition in India’s aviation market, according to Reuters.

The potential entry would put Adani in a sector currently dominated by IndiGo and Air India. The group entered India’s airport sector in 2019 and now operates eight airports, including major facilities in Mumbai, Jaipur and Thiruvananthapuram.
Adani Ports is also India’s leading private port operator by volume, managing 15 domestic ports, including the major Mundra port. The company also owns four ports overseas, including in Australia, Colombo, Israel and Tanzania.
The Adani Group has expanded into cement, energy and renewable power, with businesses involved in coal mining, electricity generation, solar and wind energy, as well as natural gas distribution.
The group is also investing heavily in technology. It has partnered with Uber to establish the ride-hailing company’s first data centre in India and has announced plans to invest 100 billion US dollars in renewable-powered, AI-ready data centres by 2035.
In the media sector, the group holds majority stakes in Quintillion Business Media, NDTV and news agency IANS.
If the airline plan goes ahead, it would mark another major expansion of Adani’s already diverse business empire and could introduce a new competitor to India’s rapidly growing aviation industry.
