ABF ramps up efforts to protect migrant workers in far North Queensland

Australian Border Force (ABF) officers recently carried out operations across Far North Queensland to combat migrant worker exploitation and ensure employers comply with immigration laws.

Over three days, immigration compliance teams conducted inspections across Cairns, focusing on the personal services and hospitality sectors. More than 20 businesses were visited, uncovering several visa violations and cases of worker exploitation.

Three individuals without valid work rights were found working, with two granted bridging visas for voluntary departure and one placed on a removal pathway. Employers face potential penalties under the strengthened Migration Act for hiring undocumented workers.

The ABF emphasized its dual approach of enforcement and support—being firm on employers breaking the law while treating exploited workers with compassion.
