Aamir Khan has officially confirmed that a sequel to the iconic film 3 Idiots is currently in development, putting an end to long-standing speculation among fans of Hindi cinema.
In a recent interview, Khan revealed that director Rajkumar Hirani is working on the project along with writer Abhijat Joshi. He added that while the script is still being refined, the core storyline has already been shaped and promises a fresh yet familiar continuation.
The sequel will reportedly include a 10-year time jump, revisiting the beloved characters Rancho, Farhan, and Raju at a different stage of their lives. Khan also confirmed that he will return as Phunsukh Wangdu, also known as Rancho.
He described the film as a continuation of the original story, noting that it retains the humour and spirit of 3 Idiots while exploring how the characters have evolved over a decade.
Released in 2009, 3 Idiots featured R. Madhavan, Sharman Joshi, Kareena Kapoor Khan, and Boman Irani, and became both a critical and commercial success for its humour, emotional depth, and commentary on the education system.
Khan also mentioned another collaboration with Hirani, a biopic on Dadasaheb Phalke, which has been temporarily delayed due to ongoing script revisions.
With 3 Idiots 2 now in development, the sequel is expected to offer a nostalgic yet modern continuation of a story that remains widely loved across generations.
