94% of Rs. 25,000 relief payments disbursed in Colombo

Prime Minister Dr. Harini Amarasuriya announced that 94% of the Rs. 25,000 disaster relief payments have been successfully distributed to affected residents in the Colombo District.

She made these remarks while addressing the media after attending the Colombo District Disaster Management Committee meeting.

The Prime Minister stated that progress on the Rs. 25,000 relief payment scheme has reached 94.38% in the Colombo District. She also revealed that 7,535 applications have been received for the Rs. 50,000 compensation scheme, with 3,049 payments already completed. The remaining payments are expected to be finalized within the next two to three days.

In addition, she noted that the government has introduced a Rs. 15,000 grant for schoolchildren affected by disasters to help them purchase books and essential supplies. So far, 14,597 applications have been received, with more anticipated.

Emphasizing the urgency, the Prime Minister said the government aims to complete all relevant payments before the new school term begins on January 5.
