92 Former LG Members Compensated Rs. 620 Million for homes damaged during ‘Aragalaya’

A total of 92 former local government representatives, including members of Pradeshiya Sabhas and Municipal Councils, have received over Rs. 620 million in compensation for their residences that were destroyed during the ‘Aragalaya’ period, according to Minister Dr. Nalinda Jayatissa. He made this revelation while addressing a public meeting in Horana on Saturday.

During the 2022 ‘Aragalaya’ protests, the homes of several politicians—including local councillors, provincial councillors, parliamentarians, and ministers, most of whom belonged to the then ruling Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP)—were set on fire.

On 6th of February Minister Jayatissa, in his capacity as Chief Government Whip, presented to Parliament a list of MPs who were compensated for property damages caused by arson attacks on 9th of May 2022. According to the report, Rs. 1.22 billion was paid as compensation to 43 former MPs and ministers.
