A total of 68 cases of filariasis were reported in Sri Lanka during the past year, according to the Anti Filariasis Campaign.

Campaign Director Prasanga Serasinghe stated that 34 of the infected individuals were foreign workers from India who had arrived in Sri Lanka for employment.

According to Dr. Serasinghe, filariasis remains more common in seven key districts — Hambantota, Galle, Matara, Kalutara, Gampaha, Colombo and Kurunegala.

He explained that the total number of cases detected during 2025 included 34 local patients and 34 Indian nationals, bringing the overall figure to 68.

Dr. Serasinghe further stated that Sri Lanka is aiming to completely eliminate filariasis by 2030 and is working towards achieving zero locally detected cases.

He added that the disease is currently being kept under strong control through continued public health and prevention measures.
