A 58-year-old man was arrested at Bandaranaike International Airport for attempting to smuggle a large quantity of foreign cigarettes into the country.
The arrest took place earlier this morning (17) during an inspection at the airport’s arrivals terminal, following a tip-off received by officers of the Police Narcotics Bureau, according to police reports.
During the inspection, officers discovered 12,000 sticks of foreign cigarettes in the suspect’s possession.
The arrested individual has been identified as a 58-year-old resident of Gampola. The Police Narcotics Bureau is continuing its investigation into the incident.
