Heavy rainfall across Sri Lanka has caused widespread flooding, with the Irrigation Department reporting that 55 of the country’s 73 major reservoirs are overflowing.
Additionally, over 60 medium-sized tanks have exceeded capacity, particularly in the Anuradhapura, Polonnaruwa, and Puttalam districts, where all reservoirs are affected.
In other districts, the following reservoirs are impacted:
- Ampara: 8 out of 9 tanks
- Badulla: 4 out of 7 tanks
- Batticaloa: 3 out of 4 tanks
- Hambantota: 4 out of 10 tanks
- Galle: 1 out of 2 tanks
- Kandy: 2 out of 3 tanks
- Kurunegala: 9 out of 10 tanks
- Monaragala: 2 out of 3 tanks
- Trincomalee: 4 out of 5 tanks
- Mannar: 2 out of 4 tanks
The department has urged residents living downstream of these reservoirs to remain vigilant as water levels continue to rise, posing a significant risk of flooding.
