55 reservoirs overflow, 60 tanks exceed capacity in SL

Heavy rainfall across Sri Lanka has caused widespread flooding, with the Irrigation Department reporting that 55 of the country’s 73 major reservoirs are overflowing.

Additionally, over 60 medium-sized tanks have exceeded capacity, particularly in the Anuradhapura, Polonnaruwa, and Puttalam districts, where all reservoirs are affected.

In other districts, the following reservoirs are impacted:

  • Ampara: 8 out of 9 tanks
  • Badulla: 4 out of 7 tanks
  • Batticaloa: 3 out of 4 tanks
  • Hambantota: 4 out of 10 tanks
  • Galle: 1 out of 2 tanks
  • Kandy: 2 out of 3 tanks
  • Kurunegala: 9 out of 10 tanks
  • Monaragala: 2 out of 3 tanks
  • Trincomalee: 4 out of 5 tanks
  • Mannar: 2 out of 4 tanks

The department has urged residents living downstream of these reservoirs to remain vigilant as water levels continue to rise, posing a significant risk of flooding.
