
The Health Promotion Bureau reports that around 5,000 patients in Sri Lanka are currently in the final stage of kidney disease, while approximately 300 kidney transplants are performed each year.
Nephrology Specialist Nalaka Herath has urged individuals suffering from diabetes and high blood pressure to undergo kidney check-ups at least once annually.
Medical experts warn that diabetes and hypertension remain the leading causes of kidney disease, with many patients being diagnosed only at advanced stages due to a lack of early screening.
They emphasized that early detection and proper management can significantly reduce the risk of kidney failure and help improve the quality of life for patients.
