A total of 50 foreign nationals have been arrested by officers of the Immigration and Emigration Department for overstaying their visas, authorities said.
The arrests were carried out on April 21 at a residence in Negombo, following intelligence gathered by the department’s Intelligence Unit and on the instructions of the Controller General of Immigration and Emigration.
Among those arrested were 47 Chinese nationals, two Malaysian nationals, and one Indian national. Officials stated that they had entered Sri Lanka on business visas but had remained in the country after their visas had expired.
The individuals are currently being held at the Welisara Detention Centre and are expected to be deported in due course, according to authorities.
