2026 New year message: President Anura Kumara Disanayaka

As Sri Lanka enters the New Year 2026, the nation does so after undertaking the most extensive reform and reconstruction programme in its modern history, President Anura Kumara Dissanayake said.

Despite many challenges, 2025 laid a strong foundation for sustainable development aligned with national aspirations. The year recorded several historic economic achievements, including the lowest budget deficit since 1977, the highest government revenue since 2007, the country’s first-ever primary account surplus, export earnings nearing USD 17 billion, and the highest tourist arrivals on record. These milestones marked 2025 as an exceptional year in Sri Lanka’s economic recovery.

The year also emerged as a turning point in political and social transformation. Initiatives to build a clean, people-centred political culture, eliminate long-standing corruption, and protect future generations through the nationwide “A Nation United” campaign against narcotic drugs reflected the long-held hopes of the people.

President Dissanayake noted that the country also faced one of the most severe natural disasters in recent history. In the face of adversity, citizens across the island stood together in solidarity, demonstrating the resilience, compassion and humanity of the nation. He expressed deep gratitude to Sri Lankans overseas, friendly nations that extended support, and to the Police, Tri-Forces and public service officials who worked tirelessly, often at personal risk, to respond to the crisis.

Emphasising that rebuilding has always been driven by the courage and determination of people, the President said he firmly believes Sri Lanka can be rebuilt into a nation stronger than ever before. As the new year dawns, he called on all citizens to reflect on past lessons and move forward with unity, determination and confidence.

Wishing the public success and fulfilment, President Dissanayake said he hopes 2026 will be a victorious year in which the aspirations of all Sri Lankans are realised.
