20 years since Tsunami: Sri Lanka remembers tragic day

Today,26th of December, marks 20 years since the devastating tsunami disaster that severely impacted many countries, including Sri Lanka.

The tsunami was triggered by an earthquake near the island of Sumatra, Indonesia, at around 6:58 a.m. on 26th of December 2004. Countries across Asia, including Sri Lanka, India, Indonesia, Thailand, Malaysia, Maldives, and Myanmar, as well as Somalia in Africa, were significantly affected by the disaster.

In Sri Lanka, the tsunami waves struck the east coast at approximately 9:25 a.m. local time, traveling at a speed of 800 kilometers per hour. Some of these waves reportedly reached heights of up to 30 feet.

The tragedy claimed the lives of over 40,000 people in Sri Lanka alone. Among these, more than 1,250 people lost their lives in a train accident at Peraliya, which remains the world’s worst train disaster involving a single train.

In remembrance of this tragedy, Sri Lanka observes National Safety Day on 26th of December each year. The government has requested citizens to observe two minutes of silence today, from 9:25 a.m. to 9:27 a.m., to honor the victims.

Despite the passage of 20 years, the exact number of missing persons from the tsunami disaster remains uncertain.
