A 17-year-old Swiss tourist was rescued from drowning at Elephant Rock beach in Pottuvil on Monday.
Police said the girl had been caught in a strong current while swimming but was pulled to safety by three officers from the Pottuvil Police Lifeguard Unit. She was unharmed after the rescue.
Meanwhile, a 45-year-old man from Katana drowned while bathing in a stream at Sindrathriya, Moya-Katte in Wennappuwa yesterday.
According to Police, the victim, a resident of Athgala, was swimming with friends when he was swept underwater. His body was later recovered and sent to the Marawila Hospital morgue.
