More than 150 councils across Australia are introducing new standardised bin lid colours to make household waste sorting easier.

The nationwide change aims to create a consistent recycling system, reducing confusion for residents when separating rubbish, recycling, food organics and garden waste.

Councils say the updated colour scheme will improve recycling rates and help cut contamination in waste collections.

While some residents have questioned the need for the change, local authorities insist the uniform system will make recycling simpler in the long term.

The transition will be introduced gradually as councils replace existing bins or lids.

The initiative is part of a broader effort to improve waste management and boost Australia’s recycling performance.
