A 15-year-old boy from Worongary has died following an electric dirt bike crash on the Gold Coast early this morning.
Police said the teenager was riding an e-bike along a road in Broadbeach around 3 a.m. when he lost control and fell. He died at the scene.
Investigators are examining whether excessive speed contributed to the crash, and police have appealed for witnesses to come forward.
The incident comes just days after an eight-year-old boy was killed in a separate e-bike crash in the same state, prompting renewed calls for stricter regulations on e-bikes.
Under Queensland law, legal e-bikes can be ridden on paths unless otherwise indicated, provided riders follow standard bicycle rules such as wearing helmets. These bikes must have a maximum continuous power output of 250 watts and provide motor assistance only up to 25 km/h.
There are currently no age restrictions for riding e-bikes in Queensland. However, bikes with motors exceeding 250 watts or throttle-powered bikes without pedals are considered electric motorcycles. These require registration, insurance, and a licence, and are not permitted on paths.
