Twelve-year-old Australian martial artist of Sri Lankan origin, Mikael Fernando, has achieved a remarkable milestone by winning three gold medals at the 2026 World Martial Arts Championships in Saitama, Japan.
Competing in the prestigious Black Belt divisions, Mikael delivered an outstanding performance to become world champion in Kata, Point Sparring, and Traditional Weapons categories.
This historic achievement adds to his incredible career record, which now includes 18 Australian National Titles, three South Asian Titles, and three World Championship titles.
Mikael’s success was also a proud family moment, with his six-year-old brother Mitchell Fernando winning a silver medal at the same world championships.
The young champion’s dedication, skill, and determination have brought pride to both the Australian and Sri Lankan communities around the world.
Mikael’s achievement was celebrated alongside World Martial Arts Championships President Peter Mylonas, Australian Squad Head Coach Colin Chenery, and his younger brother Mitchell after the historic victory in Japan.
